Dear Parents,

As of January 1, 2018, Allegheny County requires lead testing for all children in the county. Children entering Kindergarten this fall will need to show that they had two tests to measure his or her blood lead level.

The new regulations require blood lead testing for all children at around 9-12 months old and again at 24 months old. If your child did not have one or both of these tests, he or she should have a blood test as soon as possible.

Any written proof from your child’s doctor showing when the blood tests were done is acceptable. A blood level testing form is included that can be filled out by you and signed by the child’s doctor.

If your child does not have a doctor, does not have insurance, your insurance will not cover blood lead testing or your child needs to have blood testing done, the Ronald McDonald Van is in Clairton the first and third Mondays of each month. It is located in the Family Dollar parking lot from 10 am – 2 pm. Please call ahead to 412-352-1059 or 412-692-7777.

You can request an exemption to the blood testing requirement if you have a strong moral or religious objection to the test. (Form is included.)

A child will not be excluded from school if they have not had blood lead tests at age 9-12 months and at 24 months, or if there is no documentation of tests that have been performed. However, parents should have a “catch up” test as soon as possible.

As always, don’t hesitate to call the office if you have any questions.
