Dear Clairton Families and Community,

The 2014-15 school year ended with several notable events. Our high school improved student achievement scores significantly on the Keystone Exams resulting in a jump on the School Performance Profile (SPP) score for the third consecutive year. 73% of students passed the Algebra exam and 82% passed the Literature Exam. Our Clairton Bear’s Football Team earned another WPIAL Championship when they defeated the Jeanette Jayhawks at Heinz Field. Antonio Brown, wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, invited the football team to a premier viewing of the movie “Concussion” on December 23, prior to the Christmas Day release. The movie was filmed in Pittsburgh and enjoyed by the players and special guests. Antonio Brown’s generosity and continued support of our athletic program is greatly appreciated. Our elementary school has increased parent attendance at several events this year designed to solicit more community involvement. They are planning wonderful activities to celebrate Black History Month so we encourage you to become involved. 2016 began on a positive note as well. Verizon informed us that we have received a $20,000 grant to further the development and implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. We are in the process of transforming our MS/HS library into a 21st Century learning space equipped with the latest technology. We just recently learned that Maureen Shaw, our MS/HS counselor, has been named the “Pennsylvania School Counselor of the Year.” She is most deserving of this honor and we are very proud of the work she does on a daily basis with all of our students. We look forward to a bright future this year filled with hope and promise as we continue to focus on improving teaching and learning in the Clairton City School District. I am proud to serve as your Superintendent.

Happy New Year, Dr. Ginny Hunt
